This past Saturday we had the opportunity to participate in the Money Smart Week Tailgate put on by the Nebraska Financial Education Coalition. This fall, Money Smart Week is November 9-15. During this week, there will be activities and presentations held across the state to increase Nebraskans’ financial literacy. The Money Smart Week Tailgate is the kickoff event for the fall Money Smart Nebraska Week.
We had a great time participating in the tailgate and meeting lots of Husker fans! The SMMC gave out some informational postcards with mints attached with the saying, “Need to freshen up your money management skills?” In addition, the Nebraska Financial Education Coalition gave out pom poms, money tips with candy, and had a money machine available for passers by. All you had to do to get a chance in the money machine was give your best money tip. Here’s some of the tips we heard throughout the morning:
-Save money each month
-Spend less than you make
-Apply for scholarships
And there were many more! We were also joined on the Union Plaza by ASUN (student government) and KFRX (radio station) who give out free Pepsi and hotdogs before each home game. It was a great time and we loved the atmosphere!
